Unleash Your Inner Comic: Standup Comedy Class
Tuesday, Feb 19th, Feb 26th, March 5th, and March 12th at 7-10 pm.
The show is on Friday, March 15 at 8:00 - 9:30.
Have you wanted to try standup comedy? Or are you an experienced comic who would you like to further develop your comedic voice and take bigger risks in your writing and performance? This class offers a fun challenging environment to find, refine or define your comedic voice. Through writing exercises and class performances, students will find and refine their unique comedy voice and style. The goal of the class is to develop ten minutes of new material for a final performance. Have fun, challenge yourself, gain confidence in front of an audience, and enjoy some low cost therapy.
Class includes:
- Writing exercises towards the goal of preparing a 10 minute set for a final performance
- Performance practice - comics will get up at least one or two times per class
- Feedback on writing and performance oriented around developing your personal comedic voice
- Support/Feedback on your personal comedic style/strengths/unique gifts
- For Experienced Comics: Support navigating the comedy terrain
- For Beginner Comics: Support getting up on stage and telling a joke
- A collaborative environment to take risks and try new things
- A rockin' show
- Reading: Sections from Judy Carter's book and Steve Martin's "Born Standing Up"
About Solange:
Solange Castro is a writer and comic who has performed all over Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and has opened for Maria Bamford. She co-created The X Chromo-Show, a comedy show that raises money for women’s shelters. In 2014 she wrote and produced the play “Changes In The Mating Strategies of White People,” which ran at the Lounge 2 Theatre in Hollywood. She currently co-hosts the podcast “Take Down the Patriarchy” (available on iTunes) and has been chosen as “Comic of the Week” on The Jackie & Laurie Show (also on iTunes).
