Body Scan Meditation Retreat

The U Ba Khin tradition of vipassana, otherwise known as body scanning, was made popular in India and the West by the teaching U Satya Narayana Goenka. In this school of insight practice, the body itself becomes our focus as we develop a deepening awareness of tactile processes, of the four primary elements, and of vedana, sensations. In this way the Buddha’s teaching on the first two foundations of mindfulness, mindfulness of the body and mindfulness of sensation are fulfilled. Ultimately, awareness of this field becomes so sensitive and fluid that it can be used a “cloud chamber” for the mind. Thoughts, intentions, and emotion can all be felt at this level where the most fundamental psychic tensions associated with clinging can be released. The experience can be deeply healing, both physically and mentally, and is well known for releasing physical and psychic trauma stored within the body. This system is especially useful as a foundational practice for those who might be interested in exploring Theravada practice in greater depth.

I studied with Goenkaji directly in India in 1974, and later continued to develop this practice with Ruth Dennison whose approach I teach, in keeping with the original tradition. This access is gentler and more organic than what yogis have usually experienced at the traditional ten-day Goenka retreats. Walking meditation will definitely be included.
